Simplifying Searches
Searching for a user currently requires the user to click in either the first or last name field, click on the kind of user, and click on the search button. Why not give users a quick search that will display results from first and last names of all users and an advanced search with the current options to narrow results? It would also be great if the "Search" button could be triggered with the enter key so we didn't have to go back to the mouse after entering a name.

Aaron,
I believe it may have been a 2.1 tweak for the Enter key. Thank you for the kind offer around showing Sales Force. I'd love to take you up on it. I'm all for learning from other applications. We'll take it offline for scheduling, etc. Thank you Aaron.

Raymond,
Thanks for pointing out we don't need to specify user type. And the Enter key works for me this morning (yay!). I don't know if that was a 2.1 tweak or if I just missed it earlier.
I love the ideas of a more universal search that will bring up associated grant requests and what not. I'd be happy to show you how Salesforce handles this if you want. It's a nice feature that can save time in getting you where you want to go.

Aaron,
Lot's of good ideas around Search. I've even thought a more general or encompassing search might be helpful. For example searching on a last name would find not only the contact, but also any associated grant requests. It may not be clear in the interface, but one actually doesn't need to fill in any of the filtering fields to search. You can go to the search page and just hit search and it will bring up all users. I generally don't recommend this for larger foundations as it probably isn't helpful to bring up a list of thousands of users. As in many other areas in the software, we'd like to have pagination available in large listings as well.
In terms of post search filtering, I've often seen a pattern where the filtering action takes place when a checkbox is toggled rather than making one hit the Search button again. For string searches we'd probably keep the requirement that the Search button be pressed before searching.
Completely agree on your Search button comment with the Enter key. It's those little things that give a piece of software ease of use and polish.
Thank you for the ideas!
